Day Seven

This is a photo shot of a game that I find to be similar to mine.  I like the way that it can help players with spelling using their own word bank.  It is very easy and child friendly.  I really want mine to be simple and user friendly, while still aiding in learning.  I feel that this game accomplishes this.  I think that this game answers both of the questions for the post! Until next time! 

Day Six

Today we worked on imagining our games.  I plan on my game appealing to ages seven to fourteen.  Really I think that it is less of an age issue and more of an issue of who needs help.  It may not appeal to a ten year old who is a great speller, but it may appeal to a struggling fourteen year old.  It is designed to be functional in its purpose to teach, and to make it interesting as well. 

My game will teach the player to spell.  It is really more of an aid, than a teacher.  It will offer practice,more than instruction.

My game will take place at a shooting range.  First the player will be taken to the ammo locker to prepare.  This will be an area that looks very similar to the walls and counters of a gun shop.  Then the player goes outside to the skeet shooting range.  This will be an outside area.  Maybe in front of a barn with a set of deer horns on the outside.  The bonus area will be just a simple outside area with two to three targets lined up in front of the player.  I think that this setting will allow players to feel more comfortable, not like they are in a classroom.  This should allow the player to concentrate in a less pressured environment.

There are a few different ways that my game teaches about the topic.  Through visual learning, comparison, and spelling.  In the first section the player chooses the correct word.  In the second part they choose the correct letters to spell the words.

It think that a the environment created by my game allows the player to feel more comfortable.  This allows them to learn pressure free and have fun doing it.  A simple quiz is not entertaining and will feel more like homework to the player.

Day Five

Today I completed the mini game.  There were parts of the assignment that were more difficult than others, but they were not too bad. The issue that kept giving me trouble was that I felt that the wiki did not explain when you needed to take a step, such as the key directions, and repeat, but only change one part.  We worked through that though.  The best part of this project was the experience.  I got to work with code and gain a better understanding of how it works.  I also enjoyed the experience of beginning to work in flash.  It was an enjoyable experience over all.  

Day Three

My name is Katie and I am a journalism and business major.  My topic is a spelling game in the action category.  It is a game in which the player will look over the word bank as long as they like.  Then the player will go on to the game.  The words will pop up with a correct and incorrect spelling of the word and the player will only shoot the correct spelling of the words. I feel that these links will assist me with the development of my game and with ideas for the game.  

Day Two Part Two

I just complete my plying to learn assignment and I feel that I learned a fair amount of what not to do.  Many of the games that I came across were either riddled with text trying to explain too much and loosing me in the process, or had no educational value.  The game that I used as my least educational I did not even find a topic that it covered.  I feel that I want to do either an action shooting game, or a strategy game.  My action game would consist of showing a word bank with correct spelling, then putting up two targets and having the player shoot the one with the correct spelling.  I really feel that this is the game that I want to do.  I often struggle with spelling and I think that it is an important part of education.  Also my favorite types of games are first person shooter games.  I thought that if I put them together it could make a fun and educational game.

Day Two

Internet Safety is a big deal.  If you do not protect your privacy online, mean hackers will steal your information and ruin your credit.  They may also steal your identity.  This, I am not terribly concerned about.  If they steal my credit or identity, they will be worse off then they already are.

Also, for the longest time, my mother thought that if I put a photo of myself on the Internet someone would shop my photo into inappropriate material.  To my knowledge this has never happened to me, and she has gotten over her fear.

At this point in time however, it seems that you should be more concerned about putting my information on the Playstation network.  I feel enough has been said about Internet safety.

Day One

In this course I expect to make a game demo.  During that time I hope to learn an understanding of Adobe Flash and how to write code.  I have always wanted to learn how to write code to assist me when creating websites.  In my career field I feel that this is a necessity.  I have already had to make websites from nothing with no prior experience.  I used a program, but felt that an understanding of code would help me immensely.
I am also excited about learning more about wikis.  I have never used on (If you do not count wikipedia) and I am very unfamiliar with them.  Learning the inner working of wikis may come in handy in my chosen career field.
